Peter Bengelsdorf started Dependable Media in 2007 after a 35-year career in newspaper journalism and media development. He was Newsday's first editor for electronic services, helping to found and develop Newsday.com. He became the Web site's general manager, and later was director of publishing development, specializing in creating online benefits for home delivery subscribers. In 2006 he was instrumental in creating Newsday's replica edition. It made Newsday the first large-circulation newspaper to offer its home-delivery subscribers a substantial archive of back issues, including page images of all its editions and zones.
WHY "DEPENDABLE" MEDIA?
In the early 1920's, Peter's grandfather Simon, his brother Harry and their associate Elias Eichel came up with a name for their small business: the Dependable Printing Company. Dependable flourished through the 1960's, finally occupying part of an industrial building at Canal and Varick Streets in Manhattan. Dependable Media pays homage to the memory of Dependable Printing, typical of the enterprises that have sustained immigrant families in New York throughout the city's history.
